Balancing contemporary practices with a reverence for the past is a balancing act for the Scarab Club, an artists' hub, gallery, and studio space that has been a center for creative activity in Detroit since 1907. The proposed renovation and addition for this historic institution aim to expand and evolve the club's footprint, while honoring its architectural origins. By mirroring the existing building over an adjacent parking lot, the plan uses sustainable materials and modern construction practices to double the club’s exhibition and studio spaces, reinforcing its role as a nexus for artistic production and dissemination. Additionally, the proposal envisions extending the club’s programming into the outdoors. Enlarging its sculpture gardens, the plan activates John R Street and the rooftop of the new addition, continuing the club's tradition of welcoming art lovers and fostering community engagement.
