To support experimental cultural production of established and emerging African-American artists in the city of Detroit and beyond, the guiding plan and proposed addition prepared for the Charles H Wright Museum of African American reimagine the institution’s interior configuration, including entries, permanent and temporary galleries, event and performance spaces, and connections to the outdoors. Aiming to enhance spatial efficiency, improve circulatory legibility, and provide flexible spaces for programming, the proposal transcends the typical scope of renovation plans. It seeks to reshape the museum’s organizational strategies by consolidating key functions and exploring possibilities for programmatic expansion. Additionally, by looking to new artistic mediums, the plan envisions the evolution of the institution through new media installations, immersive environments, and production spaces for resident artists. This positions the museum at the forefront of cultural innovation, reflecting its commitment to dynamic and forward-thinking artistic expression.
